I wasn’t sure if RODE’s new iOS microphone, the RODE Smartlav, would work while shooting video on the phone, considering they developed a great audio recording app to go with it. However, they managed to make it do both, and it’s a pretty exciting result!

Is this available now? Where can I buy it? I am shooting a wedding video on March 1st and would love to use this. Any info would be helpful

If you’d like, there is a pre-order page set up, and you can reserve yours: http://www.dvestore.com/rode-smartlav/

Hi there,
We don’t have a 100% sure date for the release, but I do know it’ll be after your shoot, as they’re looking at the first week of March at the earliest.
This is a great mic for iPhone use, but depending on your setup, I could still recommend a good lav option for you.

Hi Jesse,
I just got one of these. Do you know how to reduce the background/white noise the mic picks up whilst using the phone to record video as well?
It’s definitely a step up from the native onboard mic, but it picks up a ton of white noise and hissing too.
Any thoughts would be really appreciated. Thank you for your hard work in bringing this review to us though.

Hi there,
I haven’t really used it quite enough to notice/edit the audio on it. When white noise becomes an issue in regular audio though, I generally recommend decreasing the volume of the mic to around 50% (considering the iPhone isn’t going to have awesome audio preamps) and then boost it once your video is recorded.
You have to adjust the volume in the RODE app, even if you’re recording the audio with iPhone video, the video app doesn’t have an audio control (that I found).
Hopefully this helps!
